Physiotherapy for Elbow Pain in Ottawa’s East End

Understand Your Elbow Pain and Move with More Comfort

Elbow pain can make daily tasks surprisingly difficult. Lifting, gripping, typing, carrying groceries, opening doors, exercising, or playing sports can become uncomfortable when the elbow is painful, stiff, weak, or sensitive.

Elbow pain may start suddenly after a fall, twist, impact, or sports injury. It can also develop gradually from repetitive strain, overuse, gripping, lifting, throwing, racquet sports, computer work, or manual tasks. For some people, symptoms are related to tendon irritation, joint stiffness, ligament strain, nerve sensitivity, or changes in how the shoulder, wrist, and forearm are working together.

The elbow connects the upper arm to the forearm and plays an important role in reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, and hand function. When the elbow is not moving or loading well, it can affect the wrist, hand, shoulder, and neck as well.

At CORPEO, located in Gloucester Centre in Ottawa’s east end, our physiotherapy team takes a detailed approach to understanding what is contributing to your elbow pain. The goal is to reduce discomfort, improve mobility, restore strength, and help you return to daily activities with more confidence.

Understanding the Cause

Why Elbow Pain Happens

Elbow pain can develop when the tendons, muscles, joints, ligaments, or nerves around the elbow become irritated or overloaded. It may be linked to repeated movements, a sudden injury, sport demands, work tasks, or reduced strength and control in the arm.

Common contributors to elbow pain include:

Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow, also called lateral epicondylitis or lateral elbow tendinopathy, usually causes pain on the outside of the elbow. It is often related to repeated gripping, lifting, twisting, or wrist extension. Despite the name, it can affect people who do not play tennis.

Golfer’s Elbow

Golfer’s elbow, also called medial epicondylitis or medial elbow tendinopathy, causes pain on the inside of the elbow. It can develop from repeated gripping, pulling, lifting, throwing, or wrist flexion. It may affect golfers, weightlifters, tradespeople, and people who perform repetitive hand tasks.

Elbow Sprains or Strains

A sprain involves a ligament, while a strain affects a muscle or tendon. These injuries can happen after a fall, sudden pull, awkward movement, or sport-related force. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, weakness, stiffness, or difficulty using the arm.

Throwing-Related Elbow Pain

Throwing sports can place repeated stress on the inside of the elbow. This may irritate the ligaments, tendons, or joint surfaces. Athletes may notice pain during throwing, reduced accuracy, loss of power, or discomfort after activity.

Nerve Sensitivity

Nerves that pass around the elbow can become irritated or sensitive. This may cause tingling, numbness, burning, or weakness into the forearm, hand, or fingers. Symptoms may change with elbow position, posture, or repeated arm use.

Joint Stiffness or Arthritis

Joint stiffness, arthritis, or previous injury can reduce elbow mobility and make daily movements harder. Some people notice difficulty fully bending or straightening the elbow, especially after rest or activity.

Recognizing the Signs

Common Elbow Pain Symptoms

Elbow pain can vary depending on the cause, severity, and stage of recovery.

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain on the inside or outside of the elbow
  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion
  • Pain with gripping, lifting, throwing, or twisting
  • Weakness in the elbow, wrist, or forearm
  • Tenderness around the elbow joint
  • Tingling, numbness, or burning into the hand or fingers
  • Difficulty straightening or bending the elbow
  • Symptoms that worsen with repeated use
How We Help

How Physiotherapy Can Help with Elbow Pain

Physiotherapy can help identify what is contributing to your elbow pain and guide you through a personalized recovery plan. Your physiotherapist will assess the elbow itself, while also considering how the wrist, hand, shoulder, neck, strength, mobility, and daily movement habits may be involved.

At CORPEO, your assessment may include a discussion about your symptoms, injury history, work demands, sport or activity level, hand use, and the movements that make your pain better or worse. Your physiotherapist may also assess range of motion, grip strength, joint mobility, tenderness, nerve sensitivity, posture, and functional tasks such as lifting, gripping, pushing, or throwing.

Based on your assessment, your physiotherapy plan may include:

Mobility and Range of Motion Exercises

Gentle mobility exercises can help reduce stiffness, improve elbow movement, and support more comfortable use of the arm.

Strengthening Exercises

Targeted strengthening may focus on the elbow, wrist, forearm, shoulder, and grip. Building strength can help improve tolerance for lifting, gripping, sport, and daily tasks.

Manual Therapy

Hands-on techniques may be used to improve joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, and support more comfortable movement through the elbow, wrist, or forearm.

Tendon Loading Exercises

For tendon-related elbow pain, your physiotherapist may guide you through progressive loading exercises. These help the tendon gradually tolerate more force and activity over time.

Nerve Mobility Exercises

If nerve sensitivity is contributing to symptoms, carefully guided nerve mobility exercises may help reduce irritation and improve comfort.

Activity and Ergonomic Education

Your physiotherapist can help you adjust lifting technique, gripping habits, workstation setup, tool use, sport technique, or training load to reduce stress on the elbow.
